The Congruence Gap: When You Feel Strong But Don't Look Like It Yet
I have a phrase for this season of my life: the congruence gap.
It's the space between how strong and capable I feel on the inside and how my body actually looks right now, and it is a real, disorienting gap. Not a small one. I can walk into a room feeling like the most vibrant, confident version of myself, and still catch my reflection and feel a flash of wait, that doesn't match.
Nobody warned me about this part of my thirties turning into my forties. Nobody said: your insides are going to feel more solid than they've ever felt, and your outsides are going to take their sweet time catching up.
I'm not talking about weight. I'm talking about skin that doesn't behave the way it used to. Energy that shows up differently depending on the week. A body that used to respond predictably to effort and now just doesn't, some days, no matter what I do.
Here's what I've landed on, and it's not a tidy bow: I'm not waiting for my outside to match my inside before I claim the inside as real. The strength is real right now. The vibrancy is real right now. My body is just sun-weathered, not weathered, there's a difference, and I'm learning to see it.
If you're in this gap too, if you feel like you're more you than you've ever been, but your body hasn't gotten the memo yet, you're not behind. You're not broken. You're just in the gap, and the gap closes slower than we want it to. That doesn't make the strength any less true.
One thing to sit with this week: where do you feel the congruence gap most, and can you let the inside be true without waiting for the outside to agree?
