Not Broken. Not Behind. Just in the Gap.
I used to think confidence was a feeling. Something that showed up first, and then you acted from it. Get the feeling, then do the thing.
I don't believe that anymore.
Here's what I actually think now, sitting in my car in a school pickup line, coffee gone cold in the cupholder: confidence is a posture you take before the feeling ever shows up. You set the tone. The room catches up to you, not the other way around.
This has been a hard season to practice what I preach. My house is loud: five kids, two schedules, a business in transition, a marriage I'm choosing on purpose every single day. Some mornings I do not feel steady at all. Some mornings I feel like the draft coming in under the door.
But here's the thing I keep relearning: I don't have to feel like her to be her. I just have to set the tone and stay in the room long enough for it to catch up. That's the whole gap, if I'm honest — the space between who I am and who I'm performing — and closing it was never about waiting to feel ready.
If you're in a season where you don't feel like yourself, where the version of you that used to have it together feels like she's on vacation somewhere without you, I don't think the answer is waiting to feel like her again. I think the answer is showing up anyway. Choosing your person anyway, even on the days it's not easy.
You don't need the feeling first. Not broken. Not behind. Just in the gap — and the gap closes when you stop waiting for it to feel different first.
One thing to sit with this week: where in your life are you waiting to feel ready before you act, and what would it look like to set the tone first instead?
